Steven Beschloss brings a timely topic to PCFR in our opening program of the season. Mr. Beschloss is the co-author of the just-released Adrift: Charting Our Course Back to a Great Nation (Prometheus Books). Recently he has been featured on MSNBC and Fox Business to talk about his new book. Mr. Beschloss is an award-winning journalist who has written about business, economics, urban, and international affairs - from the U.S. and overseas - for the New York Times, New Republic, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Parade Magazine, Village Voice, Newsday and many other publications. Chosen Journalist of the Year in Virginia and honored for his writing by the American Society of Journalists and Authors, he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his seven-part series in the Virginian Pilot examining boom and bust in the southern United States. He has been based overseas in London, Helsinki, and Moscow, as well as in such American cities as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.
Our own esteemed member Sue Clark-Johnson says this about Steven’s book: "This is a book that is just right for this time. William Harris and Steven Beschloss have given the clarion call for urgency in beginning the national conversation. They convinced me that our nation's survival -- as we know it -- is imminently at stake. They lay out the case for the critical four "C's" -- communication, collaboration, cooperation and, above all else, commitment to moving our country forward. Now." -Sue Clark-Johnson, Executive Director, Morrison Institute for Public Policy, and former President, Gannett Co. Inc., US Publishing Division
In addition, Beschloss is an award-winning filmmaker whose fiction and documentary work has been seen and sold to more than 20 countries and translated into more than a dozen languages. His film, “The Miracle,” shot in St. Petersburg, Russia, for French and German television, was a focus of debate by leading European journalists at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. A graduate of Haverford College and the master’s program of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Beschloss also spent a year studying economic history in the graduate school of the London School of Economics.
PCFR is pleased to welcome Mr. Beschloss as the first speaker of the 2011-2012 season.
