Event Recap: PCFR Welcomes Japanese Consulate for Sports Diplomacy Visit to Player15 Group
As part of its growing work on sports diplomacy, the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations (PCFR) organized a special visit in October for representatives of the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles to the Phoenix Mercury's state-of-the-art training facility and a meeting with leadership from Player 15 Group, the organization behind the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury.
The visit highlighted the growing connections between Arizona and Japanese basketball. Japan has seen rising interest in the sport, driven by the international success of its national teams and Japanese players in the NBA, alongside expanded NBA broadcasting and youth development initiatives. The Phoenix Mercury have built direct ties with Japanese basketball, most recently hosting Japan's women's national team for a preseason game in April 2026—the third such matchup following games in 2012 and 2013.
The delegation toured the Mountain America Performance Center, the Mercury's 58,000-square-foot training facility, which opened in 2024 as part of a $100 million investment in downtown Phoenix. Featuring two dedicated basketball courts, advanced performance technology, recovery facilities, and comprehensive player amenities, the center represents a landmark investment in women's professional sports.
A special highlight was the opportunity to welcome Corey Gaines, head coach of Japan's women's national basketball team and former head coach of the Phoenix Mercury, who led the Mercury to the 2009 WNBA championship. Gaines's long standing connections to both Japanese and Arizona basketball offered a particularly fitting illustration of the personal and professional relationships that sports can foster across borders.
The visit underscored PCFR's commitment to leveraging Arizona's growing prominence in professional sports to deepen international relationships and create new opportunities for engagement with global partners. We are very grateful to our good friends at Player15 Group, including Dan Costello and Ron Li, for coordinating the visit!
